Eat With Your Eyes

Recently, I had the privilege of creating something truly special for my friend’s art show, "Eat With Your Eyes." The show, hosted by a talented Black artist from Queens, was an evocative exploration of the naked body, paired with stunning images of food and desserts. The exhibit pushed boundaries, blending sensuality with indulgence, and evoked strong emotional reactions from viewers. I knew I wanted to create something that could enhance this experience on a deeper sensory level.
This is where the idea of creating two complementary lines of candles came to life. I wanted to give people something they could literally "eat with their eyes"—and smell with their noses. Candles, after all, are the perfect vehicle for carrying emotions and memories through scent.
The Candle Lines:
Fruity Scents with Pressed Fruit Embellishments
The first line was inspired by the vibrancy and freshness of fruit. Think rich, juicy scents that burst with life, much like the fresh produce at a bustling market. These candles aren’t just about fragrance—they also incorporate real pressed fruit into the design. The subtle pops of color and texture add a visual element that mimics the playful yet intimate theme of the art show.
The second line was all about warmth and comfort. Scents that remind you of freshly baked cake, creamy sorbet, and the rich aromas that fill the kitchen during a day of indulgent baking. These candles were designed to complement the sweeter side of the exhibit, drawing parallels between the decadence of dessert and the beauty of the human form. Each candle is made with 100% soy wax, while the intricate embellishments are a blend of soy, ensuring a clean burn and an eye-catching design.
Why Candles?
Scent is one of the strongest triggers of memory and emotion. I wanted these candles to add an extra layer to the already intense experience of "Eat With Your Eyes." As viewers walked through the gallery, the fragrances brought another dimension, allowing them to feel the artwork in an intimate, sensory way.
In many ways, these candles are a continuation of the art itself—beautiful, provocative, and a bit indulgent. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. People loved how the candles seemed to complete the experience, filling the space with the rich scents of fruit and dessert, while echoing the themes of the show.
Working alongside such a powerful art exhibit was both an honor and a creative challenge, and I’m thrilled with how the candles enhanced the overall experience. If you're curious about art that engages more than just your eyes, "Eat With Your Eyes" is an exhibit that will stay with you long after you’ve left the gallery—just like the lingering scent of cake or fresh fruit in the air.
